We are the living universe (the deepest self). It is expressing itself through all of our finite forms and growing understandings, in all places and times. We all come from that common source. We are God at our deepest level. Not only is that source us, but it is living all of our particular lives. Like the surface of the ocean, we are only separated by waves and ripples. We are still the ocean. Physical forms and thought form identities only separate us superficially; we are the deep ocean.
Thought forms arose at the onset of the differentiating mind; we lost our connection because we believed we were separate and individual. The universe became an indifferent, dead place to us. Thought forms (ego) separated us from nature, each other, and reality itself. The ego is the voice in your head that pretends to be you, and never stops talking. It can distract anyone from the important moments in life. The way back into the original depth of being is to be aware of the ego and take steps to be rid of the self-obsession.
The path I have experienced is like this: The first milestone is developing a practice. I prefer Zen Mindfulness myself; the second: discovering a spiritual connection to nature, however brief; third: finding a deep loving kindness nearby (the I Am); next: confidence in these experiences; fifth: transmitting these experiences to others, no matter how meager the transmission at first; sixth: discovering your inner spark of wisdom; and seventh: liberation from the ego.
Beware of the many egoic pitfalls along the way. Your practice is foundational, so don’t forget it. The first step is to practice, if only out of desperation. Remember, all philosophies are fingers pointing to the moon. Don't mistake the fingers for the moon...
