I’ve been asked a number of times about good emotions. Do we let those go too? This is a little more complicated, because of course we wanna forget and release negative emotions, but why can’t we keep the positive ones? Short answer: we can. We have to be careful that we don’t cling to those positive emotions though, because if you’ll notice, when those emotions start to fade, it’s impossible to keep them. If you have a feeling of a lost loved one or God figure, when that dissipates it’s soon more frustrating to remember the feeling than to just let it go.
I know from a number of years meditating that there is a positive experience n meditation. But, when the practice is over and the feeling begins to fade, it’s impossible to hold it, to keep it. When we obsess about keeping those positive emotions forever in the forefront, we forget that we are a conundrum of positives and negatives. When we go up, we will eventually have to come down. This leads to what Eckhart Tolle calls “being comfortable with not knowing.” We don’t really need to know why the ups always lead to the downs. We just know that they do. So, you do in fact let go of positive emotions and positive vibes, because they’re gonna leave on their own anyway. But you don’t have to let go of them until they’re gone. Don’t fret, just like every up leads to a down, every down leads to an up. This waveform is common in physics. It seems like many things from nature are mirrored in the psyche. (if you experience intense highs and lows, seek medical help)
I recommend silent meditation, because it has led me to a deeper understanding of myself and my inconsistencies. It has helped me free myself from fear. It is helping me free myself from personal disappointments. It showed me a deeper self within me that is not a condition of the ego. It largely led me to Buddhism simply because mindfulness meditation is originally a Zen practice.
The first thing I realized was God. Then I realized that God was my soul and yours, then I realized that my soul was my teacher, and that the law of Karma (the master force) was the principle that made life what it is. Just like every person is unique, every karmic path is unique. I hope that anyone reading this will be helped by silence, but if you can’t, you’ll find your way. I’ve seen a few of my other lives, and so I know why my path is what it is. It’s as unique to me as yours is unique to you, but I do believe that silence is imperative to calm the raging world.
Don’t forget your Zen moments, because they help to center you in times of stress.
Peace to you and yours…
